Darlington Boxing and Martial Arts Academy was created by former World Muay Thai Champion and professional boxer Mr Paul Hamilton. After an extensive career which took him all over the world competing against some of the best Thai Boxers, Paul began passing on some of his vast knowledge to a small group in a homemade gym in his back garden 30 years ago, as time passed and his reputation as a coach grew Paul went on to open DBMA at a new gym on Albert Hill in Darlington in 1998, it was here that he also founded Albert Hill Amateur Boxing Club.
Paul has trained many champions over the years and took young aspiring fighters all over the world, some of Britain’s top Thai Boxers have been produced by, trained by or have benefited in some way from Paul Hamilton and his experience and desire to grow Muay Thai in the UK – including as his time as President of the United Kingdom Muay Thai Federation. He has also launched the careers of some of the area’s and even country’s best professional boxers.
With the help of his wife Simone, Paul moved into a full-time gym in Portland Place, Darlington. Here he continued to grow DBMA’s reputation as one of the top fighting and fitness gyms in the North East and to train some exceptionally talented fighters. None stands out more today than current head coach Michael Dicks; Paul and Michael formed a partnership that saw Michael achieve a fearsome reputation, both here and in Thailand.
When Paul and Simone decided to move the gym to our current state of the art facility at the Northern Echo Arena it was clear that they still had huge plans for the team and family that is DBMA, these plans included their desire to pass the gym over to Michael Dicks, years of training, fighting and training fighters had took its toll on Pauls back and neck and with medical advice Paul made the decision to retire to the sun.
Michael and long time member & friend to the gym Simon Harrison took over Darlington Boxing & Martial Arts Academy in June 2015 and have continued Pauls hard work along with the help of Paul & Simone’s son Zak Strongman who has been an integral part of the team for years, especially since the changeover. In September 2016 Zak decided to spread his wings and move away to Spain, after years of training fighting and coaching at the gym he is and will continue to be missed by ourselves and our many members who knew and loved him.
And that brings us to modern day DBMA, we hope to see you soon and hopefully make you part of our great history in the future.
